How to Tell the Difference Between Intuition and Fear
Apr 22, 2025
Have you ever felt a strong gut feeling… only to later realize it was just anxiety in disguise?
Or second-guessed your intuition because it didn’t feel calm or clear?
You’re not alone. One of the most common questions I hear as a spiritual coach is:
“How do I know if it’s my intuition—or just fear?”
The truth is, these two signals can feel very similar—especially when you’re standing at the edge of a big decision, a major shift, or the unknown.
Let’s break it down so you can start recognizing the voice of your intuition with more confidence and clarity.
First: Why is this so confusing?
Because fear is LOUD.
It’s wired into your nervous system to keep you safe.
It reacts quickly, wants certainty, and usually shows up when you’re expanding or trying something new.
Intuition, on the other hand, is subtle. It’s not emotionally charged. It doesn’t push or panic. But if you’ve been disconnected from your body or second-guessing yourself for years, it can take some practice to recognize.
Here’s how to tell them apart:
1. Intuition feels calm—even when it says something uncomfortable
Intuition might tell you something you don’t want to hear—like “this isn’t the right job” or “this relationship is out of alignment.” But it doesn’t come with chaos.
It’s a quiet knowing. A neutral clarity.
Fear, by contrast, is emotionally loud. It feels panicked, pressured, or overwhelming.
Ask yourself:
-
Does this feel grounded or frantic?
-
Am I being pulled gently… or pushed with urgency?
2. Fear needs proof. Intuition doesn’t.
Fear wants data. Validation. Guarantees.
It asks, “But what if this doesn’t work?”
Intuition doesn’t explain itself—it just knows.
If you’re looping in overthinking, trying to “figure it out” from every angle, chances are you’re in a fear spiral.
If you feel a quiet, irrational, inexplicable pull… that’s probably intuition.
3. Intuition is body-based. Fear is mind-based.
Intuition speaks through the body. You might feel it in your gut, your heart, your chest, or even a sudden expansion or contraction in your energy.
Fear tends to live in your head—racing thoughts, “what ifs,” and stories on repeat.
Try this:
Close your eyes.
Ask the question.
Then tune into your body and ask, Does this feel like truth or protection? Expansion or contraction?
4. Fear wants comfort. Intuition wants alignment.
Fear says, “Stay where it’s familiar.”
Intuition says, “Step into who you’re becoming.”
And yes, sometimes your intuition will scare you a little—because growth is scary. But there’s a difference between fear as a signal and fear as resistance.
If your heart is saying YES but your ego is freaking out? That’s growth, not danger.
5. The more you practice, the clearer it gets
Learning to trust your intuition is like building a muscle. The more you tune in and act on it—even in small ways—the stronger that connection becomes.
Spiritual coaching can help you clear the energetic noise, reconnect to your intuition, and rebuild that trust so you’re not constantly asking outside sources for the answers you already have within.
Intuition whispers, fear shouts. But they both want to protect you.
One just does it by keeping you safe.
The other does it by guiding you toward your truth.
The more you learn to recognize the difference, the more empowered—and aligned—you become.
